* Review for Imprint Films' release of Cross of Iron 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack *First saw this movie as a kid in the late 1970s on TV then it disappeared. COI was forgotten and really shelved away for decades. No regular network syndicated showings due to provocative era for Germany and the infamous barn scene in this movie that many revolted against. Hence with a sorted production and director with irregular approach there no or little re digitized efforts despite the great DVD push in the 1990s and early 2000s. Some DVD production efforts of this movie were even recorded direct off of VHS replay format.I watched the Grindhouse Version first and was greatly impressed by the idea and a touch of seeing the original theatre viewing German 35mm 1.57:1 ratio with original audio. Florescent green scratches that pass by vertically really give you the feel of raw projector film and the spliced in footage slightly different reel. I am a real big fan of this new interpretation of the theatre presentation and what paying audience saw in 1977. Excellent idea by Imprint.I have seen numerous critiques of this film, make your own decision about the plot and importance in modern film. But it has inspired quite a few modern WWII films as well as new fans of this overlooked edition within the Peckinpah slate. Historically It strongly resembles the real story of Oberfeldwebel / Oberleutnant Johann Schwerdfeger who survived the war and lived to be 99 years old.
