Description
Use this traditional cast-iron Dutch oven to prepare hearty soups, stews, chili and pot roast. The generous 6.5-quart size is large enough to cook for the whole family and lends itself to easy one-pot meals. Cast iron is one of the best choices for slow cooking. Because cast iron distributes heat slowly and evenly, it is ideal for tenderizing meats, browning poultry, sautéing onions, simmering sauces and steaming vegetables. It’s also great for making spicy chili and other stews. Without its lid, the versatile pot can also be used for baking.

I purchased this after researching Dutch ovens and while I'm sure that the Le Creuset ones are very nice to use, I have champagne taste on a tap water budget. I picked this up for 55 dollars after wanting an enamel lined Dutch oven for years. Cooks Illustrated rates this brand well and seeing how they put the products they test through extensive trials, I went ahead and spluged on myself. This pot is heavy. This is a good thing! It conducts heat so perfectly. Once it's fired up, you will find that you use a far lower heat. By comparison, I have a stainless pot with a decent bottom on it and will have to crank the gas up a considerable amount to get similar results. Some reviewers (for the other colors) complain of the enamel staining. This is still fairly new but I suspect they may not have paid attention to the heat and/or used utensils that caused slight abrasions in the enamel. Now don't get me wrong, my kitchen equipment has to be serviceable in an industrial kind of way or it gets thrown out BUT...any decent cook will take care of their investment (and this is an investment) and not use metal utensils or intentionally use heat that's too high. Sure there's been a bit of residue at the bottom. The simple fix for this was to use a BLUE scotch brite pad-the kind for nonstick that doesn't scratch and baking soda. Easy peasy. It sears meat beautifully and sautes veggies wonderfully. It goes from the stove top to the oven and made the most delectable chicken in milk (you have to try that recipe by Jamie Oliver, I suggest making a risotto with the liquid left over after straining it. In your new dutch oven of course!). Now for the color, this teal is so so so pretty! It's a serviceable piece of equipment that is lovely to look at as well. The color graduates from dark to light and is a magnificent sight to behold sitting on your stove, countertop, or on the table.I have been just using for the past 6 months in baking sour dough bread at high temp of 450 deg and it has worked well for that . This is a bit over the specification temp for the pot which is closer to 400 but I have not had any problems with it so far . It gets some marks on the finish that are a bit hard to scrub off but other then that it works well .Opened the box and was impressed with the weight, two tone outside color and ceramic inside coating. Flawless. Immediately made chicken and rice!Cannot beat the price and I anticipate decades of use. Will use only silicon coated utensils to protect the cooking surface.Regarding seasoning it- I own a lot of beautifully seasoned cast iron so I knew the drill. The box instructions say to coat the exposed cast iron rims with oil and heat in an oven at 350 F for an hour. Couple of things, always use a high temp oil, NOT olive oil. I applied oil lightly onto rim but unfortunately it still dripped down both sides of pot and after an hour of baking it was a bear to remove. Would suggest wiping it with a paper towel before putting in oven, and maybe midway through. I season cast iron upside down but because this is seasoning two narrow uncoated rims on both the pot and lid, I left them both upright to soak in better. Sigh, heavy multiple scrubs with a plastic sponge and warm soapy water got rid of the "fingers" of oil. Rims still a bit tacky after an hour, but shouldn't be a problem.Weird thing is that this was shipped to me directly from a BJ's in Texas (not how the seller was listed). Don't mind because still a great deal. Just suggesting if you are a member, might want to check there first :)Bought this after reading many reviews as I had been looking for a dutch oven, but don't use one enough to justify spending $$$$$ on a high quality brand. I am quite happy with my purchase. First, which has nothing to do with the cooking quality, is the colour. It is a gorgeous teal, I love it !! Next, durability, I am quite happy with it. It is SUPER heavy as dutch ovens are. I am very careful when cleaning to not bump the pot, and per instructions, I hand wash the oven. It does mention to season the rims of the pot and lid when you first receive the product, which I did. Overall very durable for the price point. This is a beautiful item and works well. However- the lid pictures a metal knob. Ours came with a black plastic nob that cracked the very first time we used it. I got ahold of the company and although they were not able to replace the item or the knob- they offered a full refund or 10% back. Since we like the item we chose keeping it and will hope to find a replacement knob. The company was great to work with and gave us several options.I've been impressed by Tramontina quality before; I have a few of their knives and a really excellent fry pan, so I didn't have to think long on this after I had decided to replace our dying crock pot with a cast iron Dutch oven. I had ruled out the very expensive one with the French name although I had one of these in the past. I also considered the Lodge brand since it rates highly here at Amazon. There was only a small price difference between the Lodge and Tramontina, so after I learned that both of these brands' products are made in China, I opted for the lower priced one. Our Dutch oven arrived today, and we put it to use immediately by making a home recipe chicken noodle soup from scratch... well, except for the store bought egg noodles. It is important to follow the directions for care and use on this Dutch oven. If you do it should give you a lifetime of trouble-free service. Highly recommended.Pot is awesome but the sent me the wrong colorWould have given a 5I've been so pleased with this! The color is beautiful. Unlike my previous Dutch oven (my beloved Lodge started cracking on the bottom) the lid offers condensation ridges, which is a nice feature. The pot handles are easy to hold, and the lid knob is a nice size. I typically use this for soups, and this has been a great all purpose vessel for everything. Cleanup is effortless. Great value, very attractive.
