This soldering stand really does the job. The base is very heavy (I think cast iron) and the spring holder is threaded so it screws into the base. There's a little nut on the spring so you can set the spring holder to be above the sponge dish. The black cap just twists onto the spring. It works great and an added benefit is that it breaks down easily to fit in my electronics kit box with its 1 3/8" tall drawers. This looks and feels like a basic but high-quality tool and I expect it will last a very long time.
