My previous review is below, but I have a new one and I'll explain!I bought this bear a couple weeks ago and the bottle just slid right off of the teeth, so it didn't work. I got a refund, tried one from Pottery Barn which also didn't work, and then read through these reviews again.Upon re-reading reviews the other day, someone suggested that maybe ALL THE BEARS ARE DIFFERENT, some work, some don't. I decided to buy another one and see if that was true. It is! I got a bear which looked completely different than the first, it's more black and the shape of the face was different. You'll see below that the first bear looked exactly like the picture, color and all. This second bear does open bottles as it should, so I'm giving 3 stars for the trouble and the fact that you have no idea if you'll get a lemon or not.----Previous review: I bought this despite the bad reviews, I was hoping I'd have luck like the few good ones. The teeth are short and rounded and the bottle slips right off. Whether you pull the bottle up or down, it didn't work. The snout is also longer (sticks out more 3D-style) than I thought so it wasn't as cute and round as this looks, but the color is true to the picture and it's made of heavy, durable metal. I returned it and bought something from Pottery Barn. There seems to be some discussion about whether this product actually works, and how it is to be used. Maybe it's a difference in manufacturing?? All I know is, mine works great, and it looks awesome! It's cast iron, and the back wasn't painted and had a little rust spotting, so I'm going to have to powder coat it (hope I can replicate the cool paint job!), but that's only because I'm fussy. It's perfectly usable right out of the box. The edge of the bottle cap goes over the bear's bottom teeth, the top of the cap against his top teeth. Not hard to figure out, I don't know why others had so much trouble. I guess someone might think the bottle needs to go in horizontally, and that does sort of work (I tried it out of curiosity), but it's much harder to hook it correctly doing it that way. What they need now is a set of open bear paws to catch the caps!Love this anchor bottle opener. I got it for decoration in my tray in my bar pool room and we use it all the time. Very sturdy. It exceeded our expectations. I purchased this gadget as a retirement gift for an academic couple who own a vacation home on a lake in the Adirondacks that is furnished, well, in a style you might call "Deliberately Mountain Rustic." I knew that I'd chosen perfectly when they called to say that they'd considered buying the bottle opener for themselves when they saw it featured in the New York Times -- at a higher price than the one available through Amazon. As the wifely half of the couple is now a Professor Emeritus of Marketing at a major U.S. school of business, the good price was truly icing on a cake. Or, perhaps, the perfect head on a glass of beer.I really love these non traditional wall mounted bottle openers, and this one is very handsome and not too silly. My one tiny complaint is that it is very hard to get the bear level because it isn't perfectly symmetrical. I struggled to decide if I should level it based on the holes at the top, the eyes, or the mouth. Eventually I went with the eyes. Still bugs me a tinsy bit when I look at it, but its lack of symmetry is also a great source of character.I'll be honest, I initially bought this bear beer bottle opener for myself. Then I realized Christmas was a week away and books and hiking socks weren't a great enough of a gift for my father. I threw this guy into the mix of assorted gifts, and go figure, my father thought this was the greatest thing he had ever seen. He immediately set it up in the doorway of his kitchen--literally, maybe four minutes and twenty-second after holding it, he said it had to go up. Nothing says, "I love you," quite like this Bear Beer Bottle Opener.Super cute and heavy and larger in person than I was expecting...classy not cheesy. I love it!I bought this as a gag gift for my dad and it was a hit with my family. The bottle opened itself is actually upside down, but that made it ever funnier to my family. Its a nice heavy little head that now sits proudly on the wall in my dads garage where he stores all the beer he brews.A little bigger then expected, but great.Pretty and efficient.
